Polybutylene, galvanized and early CPVC replaced with PEX or copper.
Polybutylene was used throughout Atlanta-area subdivisions from the late 1970s into the mid 1990s. It degrades internally and fails with little warning. We replace it with PEX or copper.
It is usually grey, sometimes blue or black, flexible, and roughly the diameter of a marker. Check the pipe at the water heater, the main shut-off, and the stub-outs under sinks. Send us a photo if you are unsure.
Older homes were plumbed in galvanized steel, which rusts from the inside out. The usual signs are falling water pressure, brown or discoloured water first thing in the morning, and repeated pinhole leaks. It cannot be cleaned out — once it is closing up, it gets replaced.
Some carriers will not write a policy on a home still plumbed with polybutylene and others rate it higher. It is also flagged in home inspections, so it commonly comes up during a sale.
Access openings are made in walls and ceilings at specific points and the new lines are run through them. Most homes take one to three days depending on size and layout. Water is restored overnight.
